The Canon EOS 100D review featuring all of the main settings and clever tools found on this popular choice. Could it be the best DSLR camera for beginners?
It’s been on the cards for some time now, but Canon have finally found the competitor to rival the mirrorless entries found in Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus cameras.
The cards have well and truly been laid out on the table and for all to gaze at this 18 megapixel newbie.
Find out exactly why travellers and those on the go love this camera. All will be revealed in this Canon EOS 100D review.
Canon EOS 100D review of the main features
Canon have been brave enough to make a large statement claiming the fact that they have produced the goods when it comes to light and agile cameras. In fact, the EOS 100D has been described as the ‘world’s smallest, lightest APS-C DSLR’ – but does it produce the goods when taking photographs? Contain yourself from pressing buy as you read this Canon EOS 100D review.
Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto
Produce fantastic and clear results without becoming an expert at the ISO and manual settings. Canon have produced what we would like to call, one of the most effective and powerful Auto settings found on a DSLR of its price.
And if that wasn’t enough, Canon have developed a built-in Feature Guide to help you along your way in the exciting world of photography.
Extra Effect Shot
This one is for the creatives out there. Get your creative juices flowing and start experimenting with the clever and easy to use filters found on the EOS 100D.
Canon have installed a really helpful and handy feature called Extra Effect Shot. This allows you to capture a filtered version of your shot, whilst also saving an unfiltered version. We found this particularly useful when shooting objects on the move.
Creative Shooting Modes
As found in most DSLR cameras in the same price range, the Canon EOS 100D contains easy to use settings and shooting modes to capture your memories in a different light.
Choose from Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Kids, Food and many more. But if you’re raring and daring to take your skills to that next level, try your hand at Creative Auto mode allowing you to control background blur via the user friendly and intuitive interface found on the Canon.
Who is the Canon EOS 100D for?
The first thing you’re going to notice when using the Canon EOS 100D is just how incredibly light it is. As with most products, the lighter something is, the more expensive it will be. However, Canon have out done themselves with the 100D.
Claiming to be ‘world’s smallest, lightest APS-C DSLR’ there’s no surprise the 100D has become a popular choice for budding travellers on the go. We simply couldn’t wait to get this point across in our Canon EOS 100D review.
Travellers and Holiday addicts
Could the EOS 750 be the best camera for travel? Weighing in at an impressive 407 grams, the EOS 100D is the full package. The 100D is a responsive DSLR that is light enough and small enough to take anywhere in your handbag or over the shoulder.
Particularly popular with bloggers on the move wishing to capture the best images for their website. With the ability to capture 18 megapixel photos and Full HD video recording, it’s the ideal camera to document your exciting lifestyle. Due to its extreme weight (or lack of) the 750D may be the best camera for travel. Here’s who Canon EOS 100D Amazon sellers are branding this much loved camera to.
Budding Beginner Photographers
At the start of your photography journey? After a long day handling the reigns of the EOS 100D, we believe the Canon EOS 100D is a the rival of all rivals if you’re considering buying the best camera for beginners.
Canon have produced the goods with their Scene Intelligent Auto technology found on most DSLR cameras in its price range. Don’t worry about ISO or over exposure, the 100D analyses the scene and sets the most appropriate cameras settings automatically.
One noticeable factor that brands the Canon as the best DSLR camera for beginners is the price. If you’re just starting out, it may be the cheapest DSLR camera for you.
Creatives and Movie Makers
Shoot high-quality video at resolutions up to Full-HD (1080p) and watch your masterpiece unfold using the 3 inch LCD screen. Detailed Canon EOS 100D sample images can be found when shooting video.
Grab hold of the reigns and control your camera’s settings, adjusting exposure, focusing, sound and many more. What we find useful is the Video Snapshot mode to capture edited movie sequences in-camera. Hybrid CMOS AF II provides non-stop continuous focusing while recording, perfect for sports and keeping your moving subjects crystal clear.

Final thoughts on Canon EOS 100D
For those on the move, we highly recommend putting the Canon EOS 100D in the mix. Perfect for beginners but packed with a full range of features even the most experienced photographers would be proud of. One of the cheapest DSLR camera choices for beginners.
However, when compared to its older cousin, the 1100D, it packs 6 more Megapixels in it’s body, though no noticeable improvement in the quality it produces when shooting. We compared it the Canon EOS 100D vs 700D that is still so popular today. Having said that, the modern features found on the 100D more than make up for this, enabling you to produce high quality, creative photos.
Due to its small size, it’s proudly earned itself the choice of DSLR camera for photographers on the move. Although it’s light enough to carry around, we did notice that it feels a bit too small resulting in unwanted hand shake. However if you’re looking for the best camera for beginners, you’ll hardly notice this.
But because of its unique size and weight and the Canon EOS 100D price, it has to be the camera of choice for those on the go.
Overall, the Canon EOS is a great choice for a first or additional digital SLR. The 3 inch LCD touch screen Canon have added to the 100D ensures you can hop between settings quickly and easily. When compared to its competitors of similar price (such as the EOS 750D) the 100D produces very similar photos but noticeably better video footage.
Three words to sum up our Canon EOS 100D review; powerful, light, easy.
Light and powerful first camera for budding photographers on the move.
- Worlds smallest & lightest APS-C DSLR
- Low price
- Creative shooting modes
- Only 18mp
- Image quality not as clear as 1100D
- Too small creating hand shake
